Brain Storm by Don Hahn -Education-

             Education.

If you are a normal human being, all the blood just drained from your face when you saw the word education appear on this page. Universally, in every culture in every land, people say that education is at the top of their list of objectives for their society, but walk into a cocktail party and start talking about education, and witness an exodus. Of course we want education for our families and ourselves, but do we really have to think about it now? After all, that's what our school boards and our state and local government are for: educating our precious young.
There's where we're wrong. First of all, there was virtually no public education before the nineteenth century. It sprang up in Victorian times to bring literacy to all in an effort to give children the tools they would need to fill the assembly lines and desk jobs of the industrial revolution, People knew there'd be a need for accountants, laborers, and managers in the workplace, along with doctors to take care of them and policemen to keep the peace.
Education was a means of giving the common man the fundamental tools to exist in an industrialized society.  It still is, And education itself has become an industry. In the next thirty years, more people will graduate from colleges and universities than have graduated since organized schooling began. A huge workforce is on the way all with college diplomas, all looking for jobs in the industrialized world. Either you will be one of these people, or one of these people will be after your job.
Children starting school now will retire in 2070, We don't have a clue what the world will look like then. Most of us don't have a clue how to fully prepare our kids for a field trip today, much less ready them for life in 2070.
While i acknowledge that there are amazing people working in education who are far more qualified that a cartoon producer to question our curriculum, here's a thought. Let's not train kids for jobs only. Let's train them to be adaptable, creative, and improvisational so that they will be able to move with the flow of time. Let's train them to ask questions and offer up answers without being afraid to make mistakes. Kids have a vast, unending built-in capacity for creativity.
Kids will take a chance. If they don't know, they'll try. They are not frightened of being wrong. In modern education, we stigmatize mistakes with failing grades, and we create a deep fear of them. We educate kids into a small, safe place of right answers, when in reality the world is made up of questions that have no right answers.
Every education system around the world, without exception, has the same hierarchy of subjects. At the top are subjects we all need: mathematics, languages, and the humanities, and at the bottom the arts. It's universal. But what if visual expression, musical expression, and movement were as important in education as literacy? And what if we treated them the same?
Creativity is diverse; we think visually and with sound and we use the whole body to express ourselves, sometimes with gesture or abstract movement. How many schools teach dance to every student the way we teach math to every student? We all have bodies, and we use them not just to carry our brains from place to place. To create is to call on every aspect of our brains and bodies to fire in an interactive storm of connections. We don't need to be taught this when we're children; we know it already.  But we do need to give kids permission to hold on to all those attributes as they mature.
So often we abdicate responsibility when it comes to education, thinking of it as something for someone else to take care of. I have great respect for all my teachers, who are in no small part responsible for what i am today, but in the same breath i promise you that no one out there is going to pay more attention to your education or your child's education than you. If education is a force, then it is your force to control, and not a force for you to delegate to someone else.
Change your concept of education from something that is supplied by the state to a force that is yours to use as a tool to investigate the richness and limitless capacity of human beings to be creative. Otherwise, no matter how noble your intentions, you are using education as a manufacturing operation in which each kid is trained as a commodity to fill a desk in some future world that you don't yet understand.

This is a section of a book i am reading called Brain Storm by Don Hahn
this book talks about how to get your creative juices flowin'
and how others create and how others have different ways to create art.
its a very informative read. and i love it, it encourages me to be more motivated to create.

i particularly liked this section because education is a touchy subject, sometimes i feel like schools have forgotten the arts, and i feel like kids, anybody, everybody needs more passion in their lives. im not saying that you cannot have passion with doing math, but passion that comes within when you create something with your hands, your heart. Passion, like when you listen to your favorite song.

Morning Walks

Every Morning i take a walk and lately it has been foggy
and i really like it because its not too cold
sometimes i feel like im in a scary movie!
just walking into the distance and disappear.

On my walks i listen to music, and i vary my music in all genres
it can go from 70's to Big Band to Led Zeppelin some jazz and sometimes Tupac.
lately i have been listening to a lot of Chuck Berry!
i love all kinds of music.. i like a little bit of everything.
Anyways, when i listen to music, in my head i ALWAYS pretend that im the one who is preforming the one who is playing the instruments ALL of them not just one, like, theres a BUNCH of carols in my little senario playing the trumpet, the drums, the piano guitar and so on..
and gosh darn it! im good at it!
i like walking by myself, its my "me time" and it truly clears your mind, you think about everything! mainly about your future, what you're going to do and how you're going to do it.
its scary but its reality.
and i always remind myself who i truly am and what i want to accomplish either for the day or for the future.

so after these walks i always end up with a clear mind and ready to begin my day.
it is truly wonderful.

Peg Entwistle "Hollywood's Girl"

Peg Entwistle
Born: February 5, 1908 in Port Talbot, Wales
Died: September 16, 1932 in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California.

Peg moved to Los Angeles in 1932 to be the next big film star
she was very well known Broadway actress, so going into film was her next big step!.
She didn't have great luck, Peg got a small part on the film Thirteen Women
of which it premiered on 14 October 1932, a month after her death.
It was first released in New York and then in Los Angeles. The film was not a success, In 1935 it was re released and they cut off 14 minutes from the film and it was mainly her parts.

Hollywoodland

The Hollywoodland sign was built in 1923 for a Real Estate Development
to attract home buyers, with already being a place where films were being made.. it was no problem for the public to get a home near there.
The sign was only meant to be up for a year and a half, but we all know it lasted much more than that.
The letters are 50 feet tall and 30 feet wide.

After filming Thirteen Women Peg couldn't find another job, she auditioned for many parts but no luck, She needed to save some money to go to New York.. but she had no savings she couldn't even leave the city.
While living with her uncle she was just hanging around the house,
One night Peg told her Uncle she was going to visit some friends and go to a nearby drugstore,
that was the last time her uncle saw her.

Peg took a different route.. To the Hollywoodland sign.
since there was no restrictions to the sign at the time.. she had no problem going,
once she reached to the letter 'H' she found a latter that was near by,
climbed it, and jumped.
Two days later a lady who was hiking found a purse and a coat and inside the purse she found a suicide note. she looked down further down the hill and saw a body.
The lady then made an anonymous call to the police

Transcript of the call she made to the LA police department:

"I was hiking near the Hollywood sign today and near the bottom i found a woman's shoe and jacket. A little further i noticed a purse. In it was a suicide note. I looked down the mountain and saw a body. I dont want any publicity in this matter, so i wrapped up the jacket, shoes and purse in a bundle and laid them on the steps of the Hollywood Police Station"

The Note said,
"I am afraid I am a coward. I am sorry for everything. If i had done this a long time ago, it would have saved a lot of pain" P.E.

The cause of death, she had many fractures of the pelvis
they say she died quick.
This was all over the newspapers.. and her suicide note was published to see if anyone would have a clue who she was, and her uncle saw it and recognized the initials and instantly thought, that was his niece.
later he went to the morgue to identify her body.

She was 24 years old.
After her death there was a letter mailed to her uncle's house where she lived, about a part they wanted her to star in about a young girl who commits suicide. The irony..

You're probably wondering why she did it.
some say she was depressed because being in Hollywood around many stars she felt she wasn't a good actress,
others say she was drunk while she walked up to the sign, but then again she already had a suicide note.
i wonder how long she carried that note and when she decided to end her life, or maybe she wrote it before she left home.
i wonder why she chose the Hollywoodland sign, was it because it represented fame? success? a sign that failed her or she failed the sign?.

The thing with Hollywood, some think that just by being there they will be successful or someone will discover them,
some are lucky some are not, it's not impossible...but, it's not a glamorous world.

Today,
there has been sightings of a woman dressed from the 30's wandering around the Hollywood hills,
people who have encountered her say that after seeing her or when they're just walking near the sign they smell a strong scent of gardenias..when there's no gardenias in sight.

Why is she still there? is she stuck? is this a reoccurring haunting? does she relive her suicide?
Hollywood has witnessed many deaths, lost hope and broken dreams.
If only that sign could talk.

i encourage you to read more about Peg, her early years, life in Hollywood and her death.
there is so much more details to know.

i got this information from reading over the years and this is based on my knowledge,
all the images i used on this post are from google, i do not own them.

Thank You for stopping by!
Love, Carole

Mark the Seagull.

okay at first you're probably thinking..
"why did you took a picture of a seagull?"
i have two reasons.. one: why not take a picture of a seagull
and two: this seagull has a story like any other living creature in this world.
i took this picture in Santa Cruz at a beach
if you look carefully you can see some fishing line on its right leg,
the first thing that popped in my head was.. "wow! im surprised this thing is still alive"
because a lot of birds do get caught around areas where people fish
it can get dangerous for them, but they still hang out around there because they know thats where they can get a good meal.

but anyways i was super close to this thing lol and i was shocked how close it let me get to him but them it flew away! hahah

Broken Ballerina

Broken Ballerina?

She danced even when no one saw her.
when times got rough
she would tie ballet shoes up to her ankles.
cuts and bruises
wont stop her living her dreams,
dreams she had dreamed for years.
falling apart piece by piece
she glued herself back together
day by day she keeps
hoping she would find love.
but too distracted by her scars
but kept dancing.

always with a smile on her face

Absent Fishing

i randomly took this picture when i went to SeaCliff when we went to Santa Cruz
i actually entered this picture to a Photo contest here in my town
im really happy i had the opportunity to enter!
ive never entered for anything!
anyways! i really love how this picture came out! hope you enjoy it!

info on the ship in the background:

SS Palo Alto was a concrete ship built as a tanker at the end of World War I. She was built by the San Francisco Shipbuilding Company at the U.S. Naval Shipyard in Oakland, California. She was launched on 29 May 1919, too late to see service in the war.

She was mothballed in Oakland until 1929, when she was bought by the Seacliff Amusement Corporation and towed to Seacliff State Beach in Aptos, California. A pier was built leading to the ship, and she was sunk a few feet in the water so her keel rested on the bottom. There she was refitted as an amusement ship, with amenities including a dance floor, a swimming pool and a café.

The company went bankrupt two years later and the ship cracked at the midsection. She was stripped of her fittings and left as a fishing pier. Eventually she deteriorated to the point where she was unsafe for even this use and was closed to the public. Today she remains at Seacliff Beach and serves as an artificial reef for marine life.

i straight up copy and paste the paragraph above lmao!

but here's the link where i got it from!

also! there's an before and after picture of the ship!

Hey,

Hi! okayyyyy soo i thought i'd talk a little bit about myself because i dont think i have yet, or maybe i have.. so if i have.. YOU'RE GONNA HEAR IT AGAIN! haha
anyways..
HI
so this is my second blog, where im going share my "poetry", "short stories" and "photography"
i like writing, i remember when i was a kid i used to write about monsters and read them to my mom and she thought i was gonna be a serial killer because they were quite violent, im not a serial killer and im not violent.. haha
i like writing poetry because you can use few words to create a story
i told my english teacher in high school that one day im going to publish a book, and that is still a goal for me, and im going to accomplish it.
i usually write dark stuff, why? i dont know.. it just happens.. i guess i like to explore that part of my brain, im not a depressed or negative person but i like to think about it because im open to anything, open to possibilities that can happen to me.
i also write about hopeful things
i write about the sky, the clouds, and the stars,
i feel like people do not appreciate them enough..
i always think about the big picture... usually people worry about how they look, and get sad because they do not look how they want to , where as i think about, "well, it is what it is and im not dead, im alive and let's move on"
(trust me it makes life a lot easier)
its funny
i always have to either have my note pad or my phone to write down whatever comes to my mind because, when i think of something i have to write it immediately otherwise i will for sure forget it and it will be gone forever, i have the worst memory in life!
if i remember your name you're lucky, that means i love you
i've always liked taking pictures,
i think its really fun and very interesting how you can capture a moment
like, a moment that COULD be a memory but it is imprinted on a piece on paper to be viewed forever.
im more intrigued by Black & White pictures, because i think it has more depth and has more story to it.
when i was 14 i wanted to be a photographer and my mom was super happy of this decision
my mom was a photographer at a hotel in Mexico where she used to work she was in charge of taking pictures of celebrities and models who came to the hotel
i never pursued to be a photographer i wanted to be many things when i was younger, i wanted to be an Astronomer, fashion designer, photographer, actress, dancer, film maker, writer and probably much more... haha
i never pursued any of that because i honestly dont know what i want to do with my life.. but at the same time, why not do it all.
because think about it.. you live on this earth once.. why stick to only one thing? that would be super boring.. my goal in life is to do a little bit of everything to try out everything the world has to offer.
who knows maybe in the future i'll be able to dance like Fred Astaire ..
ok maybe not like Mr. Astaire... but close! hahah
i wanna learn how to Tap Dance though..
anyways
i will be posting all those 3 things on here! poems, short stories and my photography
i think that is it .. i mean if you have any questions about me or other things you can tweet me : @carolcarol92
im always on twitter
:))

find love ~ A Poem a Day in May

world we love
world we hate
we live in a place
of hope and desires
a place of war and disbelieve
eyes float around don't know what
they're seeing,
no connection
no communication
no true need
but want
we get
we waste
what do we keep?
love?
love disintegrates
as soon as we try to grasp it
 we are looking for love
in the wrong places
mend your heart
you'll know where to find.

closer ~ A Poem a Day in May

your smile echoes
a thousand miles through my heart
i feel the happiness within my soul
its shooting up in my veins, the colors
you emit from your good vibe
eyes does this thing where
they keep going
towards you
you're a thousand miles away
i can feel you.

Open ~ A Poem a Day in May

closed eyes
closed heart
open your mind
you open your eyes
your heart starts to see
what lies beneath
of disdain felt
but you see
it is not so
love is on its way
to fill
the empty void
you feel everyday.

cant hide ~ A Poem a Day in May

Time
time for this
time for that
we give time for time
but when does time give us time?
you keep in stillness hoping for more
but its running out
every day
every hour
every minute
every second
it moves
 we don't
but when you move
you dance with time
you say hello
it says hi
you run
but
you can't hide
it follows you
it'll find you.

alone. ~ A Poem a Day in May

Loneliness
Loneliness can be lonely
Loneliness can be crowded
Company can visit
They accompany you in your head
They fly, they tell stories, they can make you laugh
But they remind you how alone
You are
snap..
you're back
back to reality
sometimes you get to see your friend
when you blink.

Burns ~ A Poem a Day in May

Life's like flames
Trying to escape
But something's holding you
Nightmares, fear, thoughts
But in the end
Everything burns
All you're left is ashes
Of broken desires
Escape while you can.
be free.

i will ~ A Poem a Day in May

Scared, terrified
frightened, worried
overwhelmed
many
But will not take me away
i know what will kill me,
 thus wont
i am
peaceful, loving, open and hopeful
i want a joyful life
i will.

he's afraid ~ A Poem a Day in May

his face was long with sadness
his eyes were empty as the universe
he'd smile to you
but all you get is fear
hugs? they're colder than ice cubes in your freezer
you'd get close but he's farther than jupiter
as he spoke his voice was shaken
it was shakier than the 1906 earthquake in San Francisco
he'd give you love
but no love for himself
he gives you hugs
hugging a spirit
He's scared to get
close

i'm not.

free ~ A Poem a Day in May

When birds
find their loved ones
they never dissipate
They're faithful
because they're free
freedom makes you fall
for someone.
its natural
They sing with joy
we walk with happiness
with the one we love
you will find it.

Go. ~ A Poem a Day in May

Sometimes
You just have to travel alone
To find yourself
May get lost
It's about the destination
You will lose
You will gain
But it's worth the adventure
Blue skies
Bright stars
Are there to keep you
Company
Never alone

Time ~ A Poem a Day in May

Everything moves so slowly
time doesn't have to move fast
clouds move so slow
and yet they always make it in time
for bed
time to cry
 time to laugh
no matter what you do
you always
have time

Leaving ~ A Poem a Day in May

Lungs of water
why can't i breathe in such liquid
i just want to swim away
leave behind my troubles and never
come again
to find the others
who understands my pain.

Sunflower eye ~ A Poem a Day in May

Sun goes down

i paint sunflowers on my eyes
i dream of walking with you

we even dance
we dance in my sunflower eye
maybe i should draw you.
maybe we can do more

Darkness ~ A Poem a Day in May

Darkness
darker than closed eye lids
darker than my lost soul
light as my eyes
light as my existence
i have troubles
but i know how to look up
i am far more grander than i think i am

it's us ~ A Poem a Day in May

The problem is with man, we sit in
melancholy and wont do anything about it.

am i alive? ~ A Poem a Day in May

alone in a crowd

So much noise in the mind
but so quiet out.

shallow eyes
but big ideas

small hands
big heart

Many friends
but no friendships

big inspiration
but no motivation

time moving quickly
im in the same spot

where am i going?

  am i even moving?

am i alive?

i fell. ~ A Poem a Day in May

i fell from trees
i fell from bikes
i fell from tables
i fell from running too fast
i fell from not walking right
i fell from walking in the dark
i fell from my own bed
but i never thought i'd
fall
for you.

Wind ~ A Poem a Day in May

I went for a walk today

i felt it in my arms
i took a deep breath and for a second, my mind was at
peace.

No worries, No wars, No hate.

it cleanses all the worries we have
it washes away those harmful thoughts
it allows us to connect with the earth

Im grateful to feel the Wind rushing through my soul
and making me feel alive.

What do you see? ~ A Poem a Day in May

You're running in circles
but your feet aren't moving.

               Your mind is traveling a
                 thousand miles per hour

Your hands are numb.

But where are your eyes going?.
